Obituary for Winifred J. O'Brien (Burke)

Winifred J. O'Brien (Burke)

Winifred J. O'Brien, 82 of Ridley Twp., Folsom, PA, died Saturday March 24, 2018 in the Conner-Williams Nursing Home, Ridley Park, PA after a long illness.
Born Winifred Burke in Philadelphia, PA, and raised in Rutledge, PA, Winnie was the daughter of the late William and the late Mary (Dougherty) Burke. She was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. She was married in this parish and raised her 5 children in this parish. Winnie and her husband of 62 years, Edward J. O’Brien, were frequent volunteers for the church.
Winnie gave of her time in many volunteer projects. Winnie always wanted to become a nurse and many of her efforts were related to care of people. She visited Nursing Homes for those on Hospice. She gave physical therapy to disabled young children. Winnie was a Brownie leader for the Girl Scouts. She participated in the democratic political process by supporting her party and candidates. After spending many years as a homemaker with her children, Winnie returned to the workforce as a Secretary for the Psychiatry Department at Widener University for over a decade.

Winnie had a long, loving and wonderful marriage to Ed. The family recently celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary two years ago at a local restaurant. Most of her immediate family were there to enjoy good wishes, fond memories, pictures, and a replica of their original wedding cake.
One of the most important things about Winnie and the Burke-Dougherty family. Winnie was the self-appointed Matriarch of the family. Every family party, with few exceptions, were at Winnie's house, with Winnie doing all or most of the cooking, serving, bartending, spreading the love, with Ed's help and with Kathy doing the dishes, from that tiny kitchen. Inside party or outside party, the whole family invited and showing up, drinking until the wee hours, spending two hours saying goodbye in the Burke tradition.
Predeceased by her daughter Michelle Masci, granddaughter Alanna O’Brien and her siblings Bill, John, Joe (her twin brother), Tom, Frank, Mary, Marguerite and Kackie.
Survived by: her husband, Edward J. O'Brien; two daughters, Eileen Conn (Clearwater, FL) and Kathy O'Brien (Aston, PA), and two sons, Mark O'Brien (Tillamook, OR) and Shawn O’Brien (Folcroft, PA); sister Maureen Leuszler (Ledgewood, NJ); 7 grandchildren, Jackie Masci, Maria Castagliuolo, Travis O’Brien, Evan O’Brien, Edward Castagliuolo, Kyle O’Brien and Derek O’Brien; 3 great grandchildren, Anthony Masci, Colton O’Brien, Gavin O’Brien.
